Mobile number Portability proess in India..

Along with all the 2G spectrum Buzz going around, there is another achievement which India Telecom Industry has made in the Year 2011, Mobile Number Portability, let’s start from scratch to know this better.

What is MNP (Mobile Number portability) ?

In all basic Terms MNP  enables customer to switch form there Current Telecom Service Provider to any other Service provider with in Same State  without having to change his number , … still confused, lets try it with an example

If  You are using  a Mobile number of  Vodafone  in Delhi , then you can migrtae the same number to any other Telecom service provider with in Delhi area lest say Idea!

Some Terms used in MNP:

Donor : The Telecom Service Provider who is currently providing you the Service is known as  Donor Operator for example if  you are currently having an Vodafone mobile number then Vodafone will act as  the Donor Operator  in your Mobile Number Portability request.

Recipient: The Telecom Service Provider which is selected by you to be your New Service Provider  is known as  Recipient Operator for example if  you have selected  !dea as your new Service Provider then !dea will act as  the Recipient Operator  in your Mobile Number Portability request.

Blackout Window: This is the 2 Hrs window during which  your Mobile number  will stop working  on the SIM card from your current service provider (Donor) and will start working on  the  SIM card provided by your New Service Provider (Recipient).

UPC: UPC stands for Unique porting Code , which is issued by Donor operator on request from the customer online via SMS, for generating UPC code customer simply needs to send sms to 1900 with text as “PORT Mobile number” where mobile number  will be your mobile number for eg in case your mobile number is 9818012345 then you will have to send sms                “PORT 9818012345” to 1900. Once generated this UPC is valid for next 15 days i.e you can request for MNP with recipient using this UPC  with next 15 days

What does it Cost to Customer ?

As per the Guide lines provided by Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Customer  can not be charged more the Rs. 19 plus taxes.

But guess what most of the telecom operators in India  are not even charging this amount ,they are offering it for free….

Where to Give Request ?

Request  for MNP  is to be given with Recipient Service provider.

How much Time does it takes ?

From the day when request for MNP is submitted by you at Recipient Service Provider it will take 5 to 7 working days (Excluding Sundays & National Holidays)

Documents to be Provided by Customer ?

(a)    1 Self Attested Photo Copy of Identity Proof Issued by Govt. for eg. Driving License / Voter ID , Passport etc
(b)   1 Self Attested Photo Copy of Address Proof Issued by Govt. for eg Driving License.
Voter ID , Passport etc
(c)    1 Recent Passport Size Photograph

In addition to these documents Customer will be asked to Fill out a Subscriber Application Form and MNP  Request From by the Recipient operator.

How it Works ?

What are the Reasons  due to which  Donor can Reject the Request ?

(1)   Invalid UPC : in case the UPC provided by You is not correct or is more then 15 days old
(2)   AON less then 90 days: AON stands for Age on network, in case your Activation date on current operator is less then 90 days old.
(3)   Outstanding Due : In case you were a postpaid subscriber with your current Service Provider and you have not paid your billed + unbilled amount till that day when you given request with Recipient operator
(4)   Contractual Obligation: in case you have signed a contract any contract with your current service provided which restricts you to give request for MNP.
(5)   Subscriber Detail Mismatch: in case the Name provided by you on request document to recipient operator does not match with the one which is there in your current service provider’s records for your Mobile number
